    Read the following sentences for class 1 gender:

    1. Ben is a naughty boy.
    2. He is my uncle.
    3. Aunt Della is a nice lady.
    4. Ellie is a girl.

    Gender for Class 1

    The bold words boy, uncle, aunt and lady in the above sentences are gender specific nouns.

    When we refer to someone as male or female, we refer to their gender. Grouping words into different groups according to whether they are feminine, masculine, common or neutral is called gender.
    Gender means whether an animal or a person is a girl (female) or a boy (male).

    Importance of Gender in English

    It is important to understand gender in English for class 1 because:

    1. By learning about genders, we learn about the proper usage of gender specific pronouns like she/her for girls and he/him for boys.
    2. Our language skills are strong when we know how to properly use gender specific pronouns.
    3. Understanding about gender can help us socialise with others effectively.

    Types of Gender

    There are basically four types of gender in English grammar. Each noun has a gender. These genders are:

    1. Feminine

    1. When someone or something is associated with women or girls it is called feminine.
    2. Feminine words describe words that reflect the female group.
    3. For example, girl, mother, sister, wife, woman, etc. Let's use feminine words in sentences:

      → Ellina is a tall girl.
      In the above sentence, girl is a feminine word.

      Girl for Class 1

      → My mother is very beautiful.
      Mother is a feminine word in the above sentence.

    4. Mother for Class 1

    2. Masculine

    1. When someone or something is associated with men or boys it is known as masculine.
    2. Masculine nouns describe nouns that reflect the male group.
    3. For example, boy, man, husband, brother, etc. Let's use masculine words in sentences:

      → Oscar is a boy.
      Here ‘boy’ is a masculine word.

      Boy for Class 1

      → My dad is great at swimming.
      Dad is a masculine word used in this sentence.
    4. Dad for Class 1

    3. Common

    1. Common gender is a word or noun which is commonly used for both feminine and masculine.
    2. For example, Child, friend, parents, grandparents, etc. Let's use the common gender words in sentences:

      → I live with my grandparents.
      Grandparents can be both feminine or masculine. Therefore, it is a common gender.

      Grandparents for Class 1

      → My friend is calling me to play.
      Friends can be both a girl or a boy. Therefore it is a common gender.
    3. Friends for Class 1

    4. Neuter

    1. Most non-living objects do not have any gender. These objects are known as neuter gender.
    2. These non-living objects are neither female nor male.
    3. For example, pen, paper, iron, phone, etc. Let's use the neuter gender words in sentences:

      → Have you seen my phone?
      A phone does not have any gender. Thus, it is a neuter gender.

      Phone for Class 1

      → Do you want an extra pencil?
      A pencil does not have any gender. Therefore, it is considered as a neuter gender.

    There are certain rules for gender in English, these are:

    1. We use ‘he/him’ for masculine.
    2. We use ‘she/her’ for feminine.
    3. We use ‘it’ for neuters.
