    Any names of people, animals, places, things or organisations are known as nouns. They are a part of speech that helps us to name everything we see around us. For example, advice, metal, truth, audience, etc.

    Types of Nouns

    Types of nouns for class 10 are:

    1. Proper Nouns

    1. Distinct names of a person, thing, place, animal or organisation are proper nouns.
    2. Proper nouns are unique therefore they are always written in capital letters.
    3. Examples of proper nouns are Ford, Sam, John, etc.
    4. Proper nouns used in sentences:
      → Gabriel works here as an intern.
      Gabriel is a proper noun as it is distinct and specified.

      → She is leaving for England tomorrow.
      England is a country’s name.

    2. Common Nouns

    1. Non-specific names of individuals, animals, things, places or institutes are recognised as common nouns.
    2. As the names are universal we do not write them in capital letters unless it appears at the start of a phrase.
    3. Examples of common nouns are court, people, woman, etc.
    4. Common nouns used in sentences:
      → I have conservative grandparents.
      Grandparent is a generic term which is used all over the world to refer to parents’ parent, thus it is a common noun.

      → Yesterday night, I watched a documentary.
      The word documentary is a common name that can refer to any documentary in general.

    3. Abstract Nouns

    1. Abstract nouns refer to the names of all the actions, states, qualities and emotions.
    2. It does not physically exist which means it cannot be touched or seen by the eyes but can be felt.
    3. Examples of abstract nouns are democracy, friendship, justice, grief, hate, etc.
    4. Abstract nouns used in sentences:
      → Kiara has a love for animals.
      ‘Love’ is an abstract noun as it is a feeling or an emotion.

      → This restaurant makes good quality food.
      ‘Quality’ is an abstract noun as it does not physically exist.

    4. Collective Nouns

    1. Collective nouns refer to the names given to any group or collections of things, people or animals.
    2. Examples of collective nouns are pride, school, colony, flock, etc.
    3. Collective nouns are used in sentences:
      → Can you please bring the bundle of papers?
      Bundle in this sentence is the name of a group of papers, hence it is a collective noun.

      → I want a pack of rubber bands.
      Pack is a collective noun which is referring to a collection of rubber bands.

    5. Material Nouns

    1. Material nouns are used to name all the material or substances from which something is created.
    2. For example, diamonds, plastic, milk, honey, etc.
    3. Material nouns used in sentences:
      → Kevin won a gold medal at the relay race at his school.
      The medal is made up of gold which is a material noun.

      → The fragile glass container broke easily.
      Glass is a material noun from which a container is made.

    6. Countable Nouns

    1. Nouns that we can count and quantify as individual units are called countable nouns.
    2. For example, court, door, account, station, etc.
    3. Countable nouns used in sentences:
      → Let’s have pizza for dinner.
      ‘Pizza’ is a countable noun because we can count it or decide how much to order.

      → We need more boxes to pack all of our stuff.
      Boxes are countable noun because they can be counted separately.

    7. Uncountable Nouns

    1. Nouns that cannot be counted as individual units are known as uncountable nouns.
    2. Examples of uncountable nouns are air, water, sand, anger, singer, etc.
    3. Uncountable nouns used in sentences:
      → There was no electricity in this area for the last two days.
      We cannot count electricity, we can only measure its unit.

      → He lost his luggage at the airport.
      We cannot count luggage, we can only count suitcases.

    2. Examples of singular nouns are individual, woman, lad, etc.

    9. Plural Nouns

    1. Plural nouns are any word that names more than one person, place, animal or thing.
    2. Examples of plural nouns are men, women, feet, teeth, etc.
    3. Plural nouns used in sentences:
      → All children should play outdoor games.
      Children is a plural word of a child.

      → One should always brush one’s teeth twice a day.
      Teeth is a plural word of tooth.

      Hairdryer is a compound noun formed with the words hair + dryer.

    Rules for Making a Singular Noun to Plural Noun

    Singular Noun Plural Noun
    by adding the suffix ‘s’ dogs, tables, phones, chips, shoes, etc.
    by adding the suffix ‘es’ heroes, mangoes, goes, etc.
    If a singular noun ends ss, x, zz, ch, s, o need ‘es’. boxes, classes, heroes, etc.
    If a singular noun ends with ‘y’ and if the letter before it is a vowel then we add the suffix ‘s’.  babies, ladies, puppies, etc.
    If a singular noun ends with ‘y’ and when the letter before ‘y’ is a consonant we change the end to ‘ies’. toys, rays, etc.
    If a singular noun ends with ‘o’ to make a plural noun we add ‘es’ at the end. tomatoes, potatoes, etc.
    If a singular noun ends with ‘f’ or ‘ef’ to make a plural noun we add "ves" at the end. lives, leaves, claves, knives, etc.
    Some nouns always remain singular. air, water, salt, etc.
