  • What are Emotions?

    An emotion is a feeling such as happiness, love, fear, anger, or hatred, which can be caused by the situation that we are in or the people we are with. Emotions can be positive or negative. For example, jealousy, boredom, anxiety, pain, shame, and hatred are negative emotions whereas love, peace, satisfaction, and pleasure are all positive emotions.

    Types of Emotions

    The following are some types of basic emotions we experience

    1. Happiness

    Basic Emotion for Class 2

    Happiness is also known as joy. Feelings of contentment, pleasure and satisfaction are the main characteristics of happiness. It occurs when something positive happens. For example ‘Raj was very happy when he received a gold medal in 100 metre race’.

    2. Sadness

    Basic Emotion for Class 2

    Sadness is the opposite of happiness in which we feel the feeling of sorrow that arises from disappointment, loss or failure. Its main characteristics are feeling low energy and sometimes tears. For example: ‘Kelly was sad when her mother left for work’.

    3. Fear

    Basic Emotion for Class 2

    When we are frightened, afraid or fearful the emotion of fear arises. It prepares our body for fight or flight reactions and increases our heart rate. This kind of feeling is important as it protects us from danger. For example: ‘When he saw a rattlesnake, he feared for his life ’

    4. Angry

    Basic Emotion for Class 2

    It is an intense emotion that arises when we feel annoyed, furious or mad. When someone is angry they experience intense irritation, rage or annoyance. For example: ‘Eden was angry at the villain of a movie’.

    5. Surprise

    Basic Emotion for Class 2

    When something good unexpectedly happens we feel surprised. This kind of feeling is positive. For example: ‘Iva was surprised after seeing her gift’.

    6. Disgust

    Basic Emotion for Class 2

    It is a negative emotion which arises when we feel offended, unpleasant or repulsive. Disgust also arises when we see something gross or dirty. This feeling helps us to stay protected from bacteria around us. Disgust emotions have other names like irritation, dislike and hatred. For example: ‘Ryan was disgusted when he saw rotten eggs on the floor’.

    7. Curiosity

    Basic Emotion for Class 2

    Curiosity is when you feel very interested and want to know more about something. It's like when you see a new bug in the garden and want to learn all about it.

    8. Dislike

    Basic Emotion for Class 2

    Disliking something means you don't really like or enjoy it. It's like when you taste food and frown upon because it doesn't taste good to you.

    9.Love

    Basic Emotion for Class 2

    Love is a warm, happy feeling you have for someone or something you care about. It's like how you feel about your family, your pet, or your favourite toy.

    10. Respect

    Basic Emotion for Class 2

    Respect is when you treat people and things with kindness and politeness. It's like when you listen to your teacher, say "please" and "thank you," and take care of your books.

    Examples of Emotions

    → Robert was happy when his team won the match.
    → Wilson was frustrated with his roommate because he created a huge mess.
    → He was surprised to know his marks on a test.
    → She is afraid of spiders.
    → Josh was angry when he found out someone had eaten his lunch.
    → He was disgusted by the smell of the sewage.

    We should know about our feelings and should be able to identify them. We should learn to control our negative emotions. Controlling our emotions can make us strong and emotionally intelligent.
