    The above bold words like girl, father, boy and women are gender words.
    Gender tells us if someone is a boy or a girl. Like people, animals also have genders i.e. they can be male (boy) or female (girl).

    Importance of Gender in English

    1. We learn how to use gender-specific pronouns like she/her for girls and he/him for boys as we learn about genders.
    2. We learn which words to use when talking about boys, girls, animals, or jobs to avoid any confusion. For example, A female person who serves us food in a restaurant is called a waitress. Whereas, a male person serving us food is called a waiter.

    Types of Gender

    There are four types of gender. These are:

    1. Feminine

    1. When someone or something is a girl it is called feminine.
    2. Words that represent the female group are referred to as feminine words.
    3. For example, girl, mother, wife, sister, lady, woman, etc. Let's use feminine words in sentences:

      → Violet is a brave girl.
      In the above sentence, girl is a feminine word.

      Gender - Girl

      → The tigress roared loudly.
      Tigress is a feminine word in the above sentence.

    4. Gender - Tigress

    2. Masculine

    1. When someone is a boy or a male, it is called masculine.
    2. Words that show the male gender are called masculine words.
    3. For example, boy, man, husband, brother, etc. Let's use masculine words in sentences:

      → Jackson is my brother.
      Here ‘brother’ is a masculine word.

      Gender - Brother

      → The man fixed the broken fence.
      Man is a masculine word used in this sentence.

    4. Gender - Man

    3. Common

    1. A word or noun which is used commonly for both male and female genders is known as the common gender.
    2. For example, doctors, drivers, toddlers, relatives, etc. Let's use common gender words in sentences:

      → I live with my parents.
      Parents can be both feminine and masculine. Therefore, it is a common gender.

      → My teacher is kind.
      A teacher can be either a male or a female. Therefore it is a common gender.

    3. Gender - Teacher

    4. Neuter

    1. Neuter gender refers to non-living things or objects which do not have any gender.
    2. The neuter gender is neither female nor male.
    3. For example, paper, desk, bag, car, etc. Let's use neuter gender words in sentences:

      → The window is open.
      A window does not have any gender. Thus, it is a neuter gender.

      → The phone is ringing.
      A phone does not have any gender. Therefore, it is considered as a neuter gender.

    1. We use ‘he/him’ for masculine gender.
