    Nouns Definition

    All the bold words like Alex, tree, flowers and dogs are naming words which are also known as nouns.
    The name given to a person, place, animal or thing is called a noun or a naming word.

    Example of Noun: Jackson is playing with his dog.

    → Jackson is the name of a person.
    → Dog is the name of an animal.

    Types of Nouns

    1. Common Noun

    1. Common noun refers to a general name used for a person, place, animal or thing.
    2. However, if a common noun is in the beginning of a sentence then the first letter should be in capital.
    3. Examples of common nouns are baby, teacher, parent, brother, sister, etc.

    Look at the following pictures:

    → I am a student.

    → I have a cat.

    Common Noun - Cat

    The bold words like student and cat are a general name for a person and an animal. All of the above pictures have a general name. Therefore, they are common nouns.

    2. Proper Noun

    1. Proper noun is a specific name of a person, place, animal or thing.
    2. The first letter of a proper noun is always written in capital letters even when a proper noun comes in the middle of the sentence.
    3. Examples of proper nouns are Dev, Jackson, Michael, Jessica, London, Paris, India, etc.

    Look at the following pictures:

    → This is Mickey.

    Proper Noun - Mickey

    → I went to Red Fort.

    Proper Noun - Red Fort

    → I have an iphone.

    The bold words like Mickey, Red Fort and Iphone are unique names with capital letters. The above pictures have a unique name. Therefore, they are proper nouns.

    3. Collective Noun

    1. Names given to a group of people, animals, places or things are called collective nouns.
    2. Collective nouns represent a group of people, places, animals or things.
    3. Examples of collective nouns are a bunch of grapes, group of friends, herd of cattles, etc.

    Look at the following pictures:

    4. Countable Noun

    1. Countable nouns refer to nouns that can be counted.
    2. Examples of collective nouns are pen, paper, apple, gift, bag, etc.
