    Look at the following Sentences:

    1. The fox is a clever animal.
    2. I love to play guitar.
    3. My dog’s name is Ginger.
    4. Japer is a cute baby.
    Nouns for Class 4

    All the above highlighted words like fox, guitar, dog, Ginger, Jasper and baby are naming words.
    These naming words are called nouns. Nouns refer to the names of people, animals, places and objects. We are surrounded by many things and nouns help us to identify these things.

    Example: Jessica is playing with her dog. In this sentence:

    → Jessica is the name of a girl.
    → Dog is the name of an animal.

    Examples of Nouns

    People

    1. All the people are called by a given name.
    2. Examples are scientist, man, engineer, etc.
    3. Nouns - People

    Place

    1. Each and every place in the world has a general or a unique name.
    2. Examples are beaches, mountains, amusement parks, etc.

    Animal

    1. Animals too have their different names.
    2. Examples are buffalo, fish, eagle, etc.

    Thing

    1. Every object around us is called by various names.
    2. Examples are notebook, television, coffee mug, etc.

    Types of Nouns

    1. Common Nouns

    1. General names which are used for people, animals, places or things are called common nouns.
    2. A common noun’s first letter is not capitalised when it appears in the middle of the sentence.
    3. Examples of common nouns are flower, fruit, teacher, school.

    Examples of Common Nouns

    Look at the following pictures:

    Teachers always help students.

    Common Noun - Teacher

    → Shelly's dog is too friendly.

    Common Noun - Dogs

    All the bold words like teachers, students and dogs are general names for a person, animal, place or thing. All of the above pictures have a general name. Therefore, they are common nouns.

    2. Proper Nouns

    1. Specific and distinct names of persons, animals, things, and places are called proper noun.
    2. First letter of a proper nouns is always capitalised even when it comes in the middle of the sentence to highlight the uniqueness of the name.
    3. Examples of proper nouns are Emily, Taylor, France, Paris, etc.

    Examples of Proper Noun

    Look at the following pictures:

    Kevin works hard in his office.

    Proper Noun - Kevin working in office

    → My dog Oreo loves to play with his toys.

    Proper Noun - Oreo

    The bold words like Kevin and Oreo are unique names with capital letters. Therefore, they are proper noun.

    3. Collective Nouns

    1. Collective nouns are names that are used to refer to a group of individuals, animals or objects.
    2. Examples of collective nouns are flock of birds, pile of clothes, etc.

    Examples of Collective Nouns

    Look at the following pictures:

    → Kelly brought a pack of chips.

    → It was a good batch of apples.

    Collective Noun - Batch of Apples

    The bold words like pack and batch are a collection of things. Therefore, they are collective noun.

    4. Abstract Nouns

    1. Abstract nouns represent concepts, qualities, emotions or actions instead of physical objects which can be touched, tasted or felt physically.
    2. We do not capitalise abstract noun.
    3. Examples of abstract nouns are independence, happiness, sadness, etc.

    Look at the given picture:

    Honesty is the best policy.

    The bold word like honesty is an abstract noun.

    5. Countable Noun

    1. As the name suggests itself, countable nouns refer to all the nouns that can be counted easily.
    2. Countable noun can be written in both singular and plural forms.
    3. Examples of countable nouns are eggs, book, chair, bulb, etc.

    Look at the following pictures:

    → I have bought two flower vases.

    → Do you want to have a banana?

    Both the bold words like two flower vases and a banana are countable noun.

    6. Uncountable Noun

    1. Unlike countable noun, uncountable nouns cannot be counted simply. They are the nouns that cannot be counted as discrete individual units.
    2. Examples of uncountable nouns are flour, water, milk, juice, rice, oil, etc.

    Look at the following pictures:

    → Would you like to have some juice?

    → He has lots of knowledge in this field.

    Both the words that are in bold like some juice and knowledge are uncountable noun.

    7. Material Noun

    1. Any substance or any object which is used to prepare another thing is known as a material nouns. For instance, a chair is made from wood therefore, wood is a material noun.
    2. Other examples of material nouns are cotton, silk, steel, brick, magnet, etc.

    Examples of material noun

    Look at the following sentences: 

    → This is a diamond ring.

    Material Noun - Diamond Ring

    → She bought a glass container.

    Material Noun - Glass Container

    Highlighted words like diamond and glass are material noun because it is a material from which something is made.
