    Uses of Simple Prepositions

    Simple prepositions are used in a sentence to show the link between a noun or pronoun and other words. It usually denotes a location, a direction, a period or a manner.

    In: It indicates a location or a place. For example, Can you find the hidden treasure in the backyard?

    On: It indicates a surface or a position. For example, She puts my jacket on the stool.

    Under: It indicates a position beneath or below something. For example, Jimmy found his car keys under the bed.

    Above: It indicates a position higher or over something. For example, The painting hanging above the fireplace, was purchased by my great grandfather from Singapore.

    Besides: It indicates a position next to or alongside something. For example, I sat beside my best friend in science class.

    Uses of Compound Prepositions

    Compound prepositions are constructed by combining two or more words. They are used to demonstrate the link between two or more items, as well as to represent direction, position, time, or manner.

    In front of: This indicates a position that is ahead of or before something. For example, The dog is sitting in front of the room.

    Next to: This indicates the position of something right beside or adjacent to another object. For example, Sussan's house is next to her best friend’s house.

    Behind: It indicates a position that is at the back of something. For example, The novel is behind the shelf.

    In between: This indicates a location or position that is surrounded by two or more objects. For example, In this picture, Jack is standing between his parents.

    On top of: This indicates a position that is directly above or over something. For example, The bag is on top of the desk.

    Uses of Phrase Prepositions

    Phrase prepositions are used as word combinations that serve as a single preposition. They are intended to show relationships between distinct sections of a sentence and are frequently employed to indicate place, direction, time, or manner.

    Across from: This indicates that something is located on the opposite side of another object or place. For example, My house is across from the library.

    In spite of: It is used to show contrast or something happening despite a particular situation. For example, In spite of the rain, we went to the school.

    Because of: This indicates to explain the reason behind something. For example, Shelly was late for school because of the traffic.

    Due to: Similar to "because of," it indicates the reason for something happening. For example, The cricket match was cancelled due to bad weather.

    As for: It introduces a topic or gives information about something. For example, As for the homework, it's due on Thursday.
