Probability is a measure of the likelihood of an event occurring. It is typically expressed as a number between 0 and 1, with 0 indicating that an event will not occur and 1 indicating that an event will certainly occur.

For example, if you roll a fair six-sided die, the probability of rolling a 3 is 1/6, because there is only one way to roll a 3, and there are six possible outcomes.

Similarly, the probability of rolling an even number is 3/6 or 1/2, because there are three even numbers (2, 4 and 6) and six possible outcomes. Probability theory is a fundamental branch of mathematics that has applications in many fields, including statistics, finance, physics, engineering and computer science.
