Solved Questions on Time

1. Sophia took 105 minutes to complete her homework. She finished her homework at 18:47. What time did she start doing her homework?

cmo-time-c5-10

a) 4:48 PM
b) 5:02 PM
c) 5:48 PM
d) 5:58 PM

Answer: b) 5:02 PM

Explanation: Sophia finished her homework at 18:47.

Time taken by Sophia to complete her homework = 105 minutes
                                                                        = 60 minutes + 45 minutes
                                                                        = 1 hour + 45 minutes

She start doing her homework = 18:47 − 115 minutes
                                                 = 18:47 − (1 hour + 45 minutes)
                                                 = 18:47 − 1 hour − 45 minutes
                                                 = (18:47  1 hour) − 45 minutes
                                                 = 17:47 − 45 minutes
                                                 = 17:00 + 47 minutes − 45 minutes
                                                 = 17:00 + (47 minutes − 45 minutes)
                                                 = 17:00 + 2 minutes
                                                 = 17:02

Converting 17:02 into a 12-hour format:
17:02 = 5:02 PM

Time for the completion of the homework done by Sophia is shown as:

2. Hockey's final match started at 7:14 PM and ended at 9:46 PM. There is a break for 10 minutes during the match. How many minutes did the game last?

cmo-time-c5-12

a) 132 minutes
b) 142 minutes
c) 152 minutes
d) 162 minutes

Answer: b) 142 minutes

Explanation: Time (in minutes) taken in Hockey's final match with break = (9:46 PM − 7:14 PM)
                                                                                      =  2 hours + 32 minutes
                                                                                      =  (2 x 60) minutes + 32 minutes
                                                                                      =  120 minutes + 32 minutes
                                                                                      = 152 minutes

Time for break = 10 minutes

Time taken in Hockey's final match without a break = 152 minutes - 10 minutes
                                                                                    = 142 minutes

3. A bus leaves for a picnic at 6:19 AM. It takes 3 hours and 47 minutes to reach the picnic spot. At what time will it reach the picnic spot?

cmo-time-c5-14

a) 9:06 AM
b) 9:56 AM
c) 10:06 AM
d) 10:56 AM

Answer: c) 10:06 AM

Explanation: Time at which a bus leaves for a picnic = 6:19 AM

Time taken to reach picnic spot = 3 hours + 47 minutes

Time at which a bus reached the picnic spot = 6:19 AM + 3 hours + 47 minutes
                                                                = 9:19 AM + 47 minutes
                                                                = 9:00 AM + 19 minutes + 47 minutes
                                                                = 9:00 AM + 66 minutes
                                                                = 9:00 AM + 60 minutes + 6 minutes
                                                                = 9:00 AM + 1 hour + 6 minutes
                                                                = 10:00 AM + 6 minutes
                                                                = 10:06 AM

The picnic time is shown as:

4. The clock given below shows the incorrect time in the afternoon. It is moving 1 hour 22 minutes slow. What will be the correct time?

cmo-time-c5-16

a) cmo-time-c5-17
b) cmo-time-c5-18
c) cmo-time-c5-19
d) cmo-time-c5-20

Answer: d) cmo-time-c5-20

Explanation: Time shown on the clock (incorrect time) in the afternoon = 1:45 PM

Time on the clock is showing 1 hour 22 minutes slow.

Hence, the correct time in 12-hour format = 1:45 PM + 1 hour + 22 minutes
                                                              = 2:45 PM + 22 minutes
                                                              = 2:00 PM + 45 minutes + 22 minutes
                                                              = 2:00 PM + 67 minutes
                                                              = 2:00 PM + 60 minutes + 7 minutes
                                                              = 2:00 PM + 1 hour + 7 minutes
                                                              = 3:00 PM + 7 minutes
                                                              = 3:07 PM

Correct time in 24 hours format = 3:07 PM + 12 hours
                                                 = 15:07

5. An ant can eat a slice of watermelon in 9 minutes. How many milliseconds does it take to finish half of the slice?

cmo-time-c5-21

a) Two hundred seventy thousand milliseconds
b) Two hundred seventy-four thousand milliseconds
c) Five hundred forty thousand milliseconds
d) Five hundred forty-four thousand milliseconds

Answer: a) Two hundred seventy thousand milliseconds

Explanation: Time taken by an ant to eat a slice of watermelon = 9 minutes
                                                                                             = (9 × 60) seconds
                                                                                             = 540 seconds
                                                                                             = 540 × 1000 milliseconds
                                                                                             = 540000 milliseconds

Time taken by an ant to eat half of a slice of watermelon = 540000 milliseconds ÷ 2
                                                                                  = 270000 milliseconds

Time taken by an ant to eat half of a slice of watermelon is two hundred seventy thousand milliseconds.
