  • Plants can be classified into multiple types based on their shape, size, and the way they grow. Some plants can grow very tall, some short. Some plants need support to grow but some don’t.

    Different Types of Plants with Their Names

    Based on these different characteristics, we can categorise plants into 5 broad groups. These are:

    1. Trees
    2. Shrubs
    3. Herbs
    4. Climbers
    5. Creepers

    Trees

    a) Trees are the largest of all plants.
    b) They have a single, woody stem known as a trunk. Usually, this stem or trunk gives rise to many branches.
    c) These branches are where the leaves, flowers, and fruits of the tree grow.

    Examples: Neem tree, mango tree, pine tree, etc.

    Shrubs

    a) Shrubs are woody plants that are smaller than a tree but bigger than herbs.
    b) They have relatively medium height and can only grow up to a few feets.
    c) Shrubs are commonly known as bushes.
    d) They often lack a single stem or trunk.
    e) Rosebush, lemon, and bougainvillea are common examples of shrubs that can be found around us.

    Herbs

    a) Herbs are smaller than both trees and shrubs.
    b) Their stem is green and fragile because it lacks any woody tissue.
    c) Herbs have only a few soft branches that bear leaves.
    d) Herbs are also often used as natural remedies for various ailments
    e) Some herbs like basil, mint, oregano, and rosemary are often used in cooking to add flavour to dishes.

    Climbers

    a) Climbers, as the name suggests, are plants that grow upward by wrapping themselves around other objects and surfaces.
    b) They don’t have strong, wooden stems like trees and shrubs.
    c) Instead, climbers have long and flexible stems that cling to external support and grow upwards.
    d) Grapevine, kiwi, and peas are a few examples of types of climbers that are edible.
    e) Also, some climbers like Ivy and Clematis are often grown for their decorative value.

    Creepers

    a) Creeper plants grow close to the ground by spreading themselves over a large area.
    b) Their thin, weak stems cannot grow straight or support the weight of the plant. Hence, the plant creeps along the surface of the soil.
    c) Creepers provide a habitat to small insects and animals.
    d) Strawberry, sweet potato, pumpkin and watermelon are all examples of creepers plants.
