    Perpositions for Grade 4

    Prepositions are words or phrases in a sentence that denotes a certain location, time, position or direction. It helps in explaining where something is located or when something occurs and also expresses the relationship between a noun or a pronoun and other words in a sentence. Some common examples of prepositions are "in," "on," "under," "above," "beside," "between," "behind," "with", etc.

    Examples:

    → Susan is standing beside Ray.
    → Children are in their room right now.
    → Jack is going to his grandmother’s house.
    → He is playing cricket with his sister.

    Types of Prepositions

    1. On

    Used for location: The book is on the table. Here, it shows the book's position.

    Used for surface: Draw a picture on the paper. Here, it indicates that the drawing should be done on the surface of the paper.

    Used for days of the week: John has an art class on Saturdays. Here, it shows which day of the week the class occurs.

    Used for dates: Halloween is celebrated on  31st October every year with great pomp and show. Here, it tells when a festival falls on a specific date.

    Used for events and holidays: We celebrate Christmas on December 25th. Here, it specifies when an event or holiday takes place.

    2. At

    Used for location: I left my water bottle at school. Here, it shows the exact location of the water bottle.

    Used for Time: The movie starts at 11:30 PM. Here, it is used to talk about a specific time of the movie.

    Used for events and activities: We'll have our art class at the library. Here, it is used to indicate where an art class takes place.

    Used for Age: My daughter got a driver's license at 16. Here, it is used to talk about a specific age.

    Used for nearness or location: The park is by the river.

    Used for method or manner: Shelly painted her picture by using watercolours.

    Used for Time: My parents will have lunch by noon.

    4. For

    Used for purpose or reason: She went to the store for buying apples.

    Used for duration of time: They studied for the entire evening.

    Used for beneficiary: My mother made a sandwich for me.

    Used for origin or source: We are from New York.

    Used for starting point in time: School starts from 7 o'clock in the morning.

    Used for distance: The grocery shop is not far from our house.

    Used for time: We will have a party in the evening.

    Used for location: Sarah stood beside her best friend in the line.

    Used for comparison: This cat looks tiny beside that big dog.
