    Look at the following sentences:

    1. I love to drink coffee.
    2. I am listening to music.
    3. The dog loves to chase a ball.
    4. The sunset looks beautiful.

    All the highlighted words like coffee, music, dog, ball and sunset are naming words which are also known as nouns.

    Noun Examples for Class 5

    Word that names and helps us to identify a person, animal, place or object is called a noun. For example, Raymond is my brother. Here ‘Raymond’ is the name of the person therefore it is a noun.

    Types of Nouns

    There are different types of nouns. These are:

    1. Proper Nouns

    1. Specific names of people, animals, places or things are known as proper nouns.
    2. Let’s look at the following sentences:

      Albert Einstein was a renowned scientist.
      Here ‘Albert Einstein’ is a proper noun as it is a specific name of a person.

      → It is very challenging to climb the Mount Everest.
      In this sentence ‘Mount Everest’ is a unique name of a mountain. Therefore it is a proper noun.

    3. It is always important to capitalise the first letter of proper nouns . This is the reason ‘Mount Everest’ is written in capital letters even when they are at the end of a sentence.

    2. Common Nouns

    1. Common nouns refer to the general names for people, places, animals or things.
    2. Let’s look at some examples to understand common nouns.

      → I enjoy reading books.
      In this sentence ‘books’ is the common noun as it is the general name of a thing.

      Proper Noun

      → Yesterday was a holiday in our school.
      ‘School’ is a general name of a place where children go to study. This is the reason ‘school’ is a common noun.

    3. Since common nouns are general names their first letters are not capitalised.

    3. Abstract Nouns

    1. Abstract nouns represent ideas, concepts, feelings or qualities that cannot be physically seen, touched or tasted.
    2. Look at the following examples:

      → It is important to show kindness to others.
      In this sentence, ‘kindness’ is an abstract noun as we cannot physically see or touch ‘kindness’.

      → The baby was filled with happiness when he got a new toy.
      We cannot touch or see ‘happiness’ therefore, it is an abstract noun.

    1. Words which are used to describe a group of people, animals or things are known as collective nouns.
    2. Take a look at the following sentences:

      → Our team won the game.
      ‘Team’ is a collective noun as it refers to a group of players.

      Collective Noun

      → The colony of ants were carrying a morsel of cake.
      ‘Colony’ is a collective noun as it is referring to a group of small animal ‘ants’.

      Collective Noun

      → A pack of chips.
      The word ‘pack’ is a collective noun as it indicates the group of things ‘chips’. Collective nouns indicate a group of common objects.

    5. Material Nouns

    1. Nouns that refer to the substances or material from which things are made are called material nouns.
    2. Take a look at these sentences:

      → The carpenter made a beautiful chair out of wood.
      ‘Wood’ is a material from which a chair is made. Thus, ‘wood’ is a material noun.

      Material Noun

      → This sweater is made up of wool.
      ‘Wool’ is a material from which a sweater is made, thus ‘wool’ is a material noun.

    6. Countable Nouns

    1. Nouns that can be counted as an individual unit are called countable nouns.
    2. Using countable nouns in sentences:

      → I eat an apple everyday.
      ‘Apple’ is a countable noun as we can easily count ‘apple’.

      → Ken got a colourful sweater on his birthday.
      There is a single sweater, that means gift is a countable noun.

    7. Uncountable Nouns

    1. Nouns that cannot be counted as individual units are called uncountable nouns.
    2. For example

      → Can I have some water?
      Since it is impossible for us to count water as an individual unit we consider water as an uncountable noun.

      → I have to buy some salt.
      We cannot count salt as an individual unit therefore ‘salt’ is an uncountable noun.

    8. Singular Nouns

    1. Nouns that refer to one person, animal, place or a thing are called singular nouns.
    2. Singular nouns used in sentences:

      → The child is playing with a toy.
      In this sentence we are talking about only one child and one toy. Hence child and toy are singular nouns.

      → This tree is very tall.
      Tree is a singular noun because this sentence is talking about only one tree.

    9. Plural Nouns

    1. Nouns that refer to more than one person, animal, place or object are called plural nouns. 
    2. Take a look at the following sentences

      → There are many children playingat the park.
      The plural word for child is children. Since there are many children playing at the park, ‘children’ is a plural noun.

      → I have two cats
      ‘Cats’ is a plural noun as there are more than one cat.

    10. Gender Nouns

    1.  Nouns that are connected to a specific gender and nouns that indicate occupations according to gender are called gender nouns .
    2.  Gender nouns used in sentences

      → Josh is the headmaster of the school.
      Josh is masculine noun therefore he is a headmaster.

      Plural Noun

      → Karen is the headmistress of our school.
      Since Karen is a feminine noun, thus ‘headmistress’ is always used with feminine nouns.
